about the festival
The Burleigh Winter Solstice Festival takes over James & Connor Streets in Burleigh Heads each June on the Saturday night closest to the Winter Solstice.
The Winter Solstice celebrates the shortest day of the year and had enormous significance for ancient cultures as it marked the turning point when daylight once again triumphed over the darkness of winter. It was a joyous occasion as they knew that Spring, a time of growth and fertility would return.
The annual Burleigh Winter Solstice Festival was first held in June 2002 and was the brainchild of Rotarian Ian Sullivan. It has developed into a major Gold Coast event and this year will be organised by the Central Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce Inc. Up until 2007 it was jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads Inc. and Burleigh Chamber of Commerce Inc. through the BRACCS (Burleigh Rotary and Chamber of Commerce Solstice) Committee.
